East Texas Maternity Home Provides Hope Through Adoption

A Teen Mother’s Journey: From Fear to Hope

Tyea was just 15 years old when her world turned upside down. It was 1995. She was just a teenager.

Pregnant, incredibly sick, and unsure of what the future would hold, she felt the heavy weight of fear and loneliness pressing down. Her mother was a single mom working night shifts as a nurse, and did everything she could to support Tyea–but it just wasn’t enough. Tyea’s nausea was relentless, her body was weak, and depression crept in as the reality of a teenage pregnancy settled over her.

After countless phone calls, Tyea’s mom got connected to us and our Fatherheart Maternity Home. That one introduction opened the door to safety, love, and the support Tyea so desperately needed.

Finding a Place to Belong

Tyea moved into Fatherheart within the first months of her pregnancy, and for the first time in a long time, she wasn’t carrying the weight alone. The Fatherheart staff welcomed her with compassion, and began walking beside her through each challenging moment of her pregnancy.

As her delivery date was approaching, it was time for Tyea to make some very real choices with her life and the baby. When adoption became an option, Tyea was able to search over prospective parents without the feelings of pressure or coercion. She had the freedom to imagine what kind of life she wanted for her baby boy.

“I was able to handpick the family who would raise Eli,” she remembers. “And before the adoption was finalized, I even had a few precious weeks to be his mom, to hold him and care for him. Saying goodbye was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I knew though my decision brought so much joy to the family I chose and a measure of peace to me.”

A Reunion Years in the Making

Eighteen years later, Eli reached out. He had always known about Tyea, and when the time was right, he wanted to meet her. As one can imagine, the long-awaited reunion was filled with enormous emotion. They shared tears, laughter, and gratitude for the journey they had walked separately but were now able to connect over.

“I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made when I was so young,” Tyea says. “Fatherheart and Living Alternatives gave me the love and guidance I needed when I didn’t know what to do. They never forced me, only supported me. They showed me I wasn’t alone.”

Today, Tyea is the proud mom of three sons. Eli, now grown, has a life filled with opportunity and love because of her brave choice. Her other two boys are adults as well, and though life has brought its share of challenges, Tyea says the strength she carries now was first planted back in those formative days at Fatherheart.

Why This Story Matters

Tyea’s story is not just about loss—it’s about love. It’s about a young girl who found hope when she thought her future was over. It’s about the kind of support that gives women space to make life-changing decisions with dignity and grace.

And it’s about the ripple effect we see at Living Alternatives. We believe every story has impact. We see that is Tyea’s story–how the love shown to a scared 15-year-old continues to shape lives nearly three decades later.

You Can Create New Beginnings

Tyea’s story was only possible because Fatherheart Maternity Home was there when she needed it most. Right now, there are other young women walking the same road of fear, uncertainty, and tough decisions.

As we continue to develop the ministry at Fatherheart, You can be the reason girls like Tyea find hope. Please consider a financial gift to help us grow in our online presence, adapt to changing communication, and provide the best maternity home option in Texas. No mom should walk out her pregnancy alone.

I am Tyea’s mom. Tears filled my eyes while reading this. When there seems to be no answer, God showed the way by leading us to Father Heart and Living Alternative.
