Finding Hope Through Mentorship | Living Alternatives

When a Simple Question Changed Everything

One Sunday, a local pastor in our East Texas community shared a need with his congregation.

A mother in the church had recently lost her husband in a tragic motorcycle accident. In a moment, life had completely changed. She was suddenly widowed, caring for a newborn baby, and raising young children on her own.

Her church bravely shared her story, trusting that the community around them would respond. And they did.

The Power of a Simple Question

God stirred the heart of one of our volunteers.

That volunteer reached out to our Building Blocks coordinator and asked a simple question: “Can we help?”

What began as a simple question soon became a turning point.

Now navigating new motherhood alongside deep grief, Melissa (pictured above) was carrying far more than responsibility. She was carrying sorrow, exhaustion, and the overwhelming reality of life without her husband. The weight of it all could have easily left her feeling isolated and alone.

But she wasn’t.

From Isolation to Community

Our Building Blocks program paired Melissa with a mentor (pictured below) who began meeting with her regularly. What started as simple conversations soon became steady encouragement and truth during a season that felt uncertain and heavy.

At AXIA Center, she experienced compassion. She received practical support. She stepped into genuine fellowship. Most importantly, she was reminded that Christ is steady and faithful, even in the middle of heartbreak.

At her recent Building Blocks graduation, Melissa reflected on those first meetings with her mentor. She shared how cloudy and dark everything felt in the beginning. Grief seemed to overshadow everything.

But slowly, things began to change.

Now, she says, things feel lighter. She has grown in her relationship with the Lord. Hope has returned.

And recently, in something none of us could have orchestrated, Melissa moved into a home just two doors down from her mentor — a small but beautiful reminder of God’s faithfulness.

Some might call that a coincidence.

We see the kindness of God and what it looks like when the church says yes.

If you are giving to Living Alternatives, we want to say thank you for making stories like Melissa’s possible. Women find not only help, but lasting community and reminders that they are seen, known, and deeply loved.

We are accepting volunteers to impact women and families through our programs. If you would like to impact families like what you have read here, please consider volunteering with us. Find out more about volunteering on our website.
