Five Miracle Babies

In December 2021, just four months after the Texas Heartbeat Act became law, five abortion-determined women boarded “Ruth,” Axia’s Mobile Medical Pregnancy Help Center, for their free ultrasounds.

These clients had appointments scheduled through the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) in Marshall, Tx. They had already discussed with the staff several pregnancy options, resources available for parenting or adoption, and the need for an ultrasound before making an abortion decision.

They understood that an ultrasound could verify a heartbeat and rule out a “missed” miscarriage or potentially life-threatening ectopic pregnancy. In the event of either one occurring, women can receive medical care within Texas borders.

As I scanned each woman, I explained the images on the screen. Four of the five scans were conclusive: one was not.

I gave that young woman written information on ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. I also offered her a repeat ultrasound in two weeks. I emphasized the importance of ruling out ectopic pregnancy before getting the abortion pills and explained possible indications of when she would need to seek emergency medical care.

During our discussion, she decided to tell her boyfriend and her parents about the pregnancy. Before this, she had determined to keep it a secret.

On her repeat scan, we verified a viable pregnancy.

Each of these five women bonded with her own baby during the ultrasound.

One of those first women with “conclusive” ultrasounds stands out to me: as I began to scan, the baby started moving his arms in and out like a weight-lifter pose. The three of us watching, including the mother, laughed out loud.

This little one measured further along than expected and past the gestational age for using the abortion pills–our client’s original plan.

Her response? “I guess we’re really doing this!” [referring to having another baby]. After briefly pausing to collect her ultrasound photos and prenatal vitamins, she returned to the Marshall center to share with the staff. She left there smiling after picking out some new outfits for her baby.

Last month I learned that all five of these women chose to parent, have given birth, and now hold new babies in their arms.

The Pregnancy Resource Center in Marshall continues to provide support for these women and their babies.

What joy to be a part of their stories!
