26 May Support for Pregnant Women in Crisis: One Woman’s Story
When she found out she was pregnant and lost her job, she didn’t know where to find support for pregnant women in crisis.
She worked as a nurse until the hospital unexpectedly fired her. The stability she had worked so hard for suddenly vanished. The questions came quickly: “Oh my gosh, what do I do? How am I going to provide for my family?” She felt lost, alone, and overwhelmed.
Consequently, the stress surrounding her pregnancy led to serious complications. She developed preeclampsia during labor, which continued into the postpartum period, and she nearly lost her baby. She describes that season as a nightmare, wondering at times if she would make it through.
Finding Support for Pregnant Women in Crisis after Job Loss.
At five or six months pregnant, a friend told her about our Building Blocks mentorship program. Still asking, “How do you go from here?” she walked through our doors — and found peace.
From the moment she entered, she felt calm and connected. We paired her with a consistent mentor who walked with her through every appointment, praying over her, her baby, and her family. She never felt judgment—only love and support.
Through our store, she experienced generosity that restored her dignity. Using our point system, she received quality baby items and clothing. “There should have been gaps,” she said, “but they were always filled. I never went without.”
That generosity motivated her to keep going, to take the next steps toward self-sufficiency.
After delivering her baby in February, she battled pain for months, not feeling physically better until June. Yet she kept coming. She kept healing.
How Mentorship Provides Peace in Overwhelming Times
One day while browsing at The Shop at the AXIA Center, a volunteer spoke a simple but meaningful word of encouragement. It broke through the heaviness she had been carrying, and she burst into tears. For the first time in a long time, she knew she was seen and ready to move forward.
Today, she has a part-time job that allows her to pursue her passion for helping others while embracing her calling as a mother. She describes this season as closure. She has let go of the hurt from her previous job, and “it feels amazing.”
There was a time she questioned her faith, but now she says God showed up and showed out. He never left her. He always provided.
After her baptism of faith in Jesus, she sent this note to our team:
“Dear building blocks, I just want to take a moment to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. My experience throughout my pregnancy was truly a blessing, and so much of that is because of each of you. During a time that can sometimes feel overwhelming, I felt completely covered by love, by generosity, and by genuine support. Providing baby clothes and items for my little one, you all showed up in ways I will never forget. Every onesie, every baby item, and every encouraging word reminded me that I have a village by my side. Most importantly, thank you so much for my mentor, Sherry. She was a God-sent angel. Every appointment praying for me, baby, and family. Thank you.”
What began as fear and uncertainty became peace, provision, restored dignity, renewed faith, and a fresh start.
