Each day begins the same at AXIA.

The lights come on.

Background music plays.

Consultation rooms are prepared.

Supplies are stocked.

Volunteers gather to pray.

A day at AXIA cannot begin without seeking God’s wisdom to share His love and truth. Every day starts the same, but volunteers know that only God sees how each day will end.

The volunteer sees a name on the ultrasound schedule and remembers the initial appointment…

A stoic 17-year-old abortion-determined girl came in. She had no contact with family and lived with her boyfriend, who accompanied her. The volunteer remembers an indifferent, broken girl running from her troubled past and how it led to her pregnancy. The volunteer explained the choices ahead of her and how they could affect their lives. The couple agreed to wait on an ultrasound.

Now, the ultrasound day has arrived. The volunteer’s heart is racing as the faint image of their baby appears on the screen. The tiny flicker of a heartbeat is noticed. The couple seems unresponsive to the miracle on the monitor. The volunteer silently prays for joy to overwhelm the young couple at the sight of their child. When they go into the consultation room, the girl looks at the volunteer. She says, “Thank you for everything you have done, but I am ready to move forward with the abortion.” The volunteer’s racing heart is replaced with a knot in her stomach. She forces a smile and asks, “May I please pray for you?” The volunteer feels devastated as she pleads to God for the young couple and baby. She holds back the tears and says, “Amen.” The girl embraces the volunteer with a long hug. The couple walks out the door. The volunteer’s tears flow freely.

At the day’s end, the volunteer locks the door and remembers her day. She holds on to that hug and the prayers that sustain her. Knowing that God is good, and even on her worst day, His love has been shared.
